Fundamentals of Photonics: Applications of High-Powered Diode Lasers.

Nov 18, 2009

No other lasers can match the high efficiency of diode lasers in converting electrical input energy into light output. However, high-power diode lasers generally are lacking in beam quality. That's not a problem in their most widespread application, pumping of solid-state lasers, but it has made diode lasers poor choices for many other applications. This webcast will describe current uses of diode lasers, particularly for laser pumping, then efforts to expand high-power diode lasers to other applications.

Optimizing LED Performance Through Heat Management

Oct 29, 2009

As product designers develop higher powered LEDs for the lighting, medical and home entertainment product markets, thermal management increasingly becomes an obstacle.
This webcast will discuss the effect of heat on LED fixtures, and describe how thermal management techniques involving heat sinks and active cooling can assist in product design.

Why Attend:

  • Find out how heat sinks affect the performance of LED fixtures, minimize junction temperature and optimize overall performance.
  • Hear a case study which provides real-life benefit of design tools that help predict and compare junction temperatures.
  • Learn how active cooling allows the lumen output of individual LEDs to increase without thermal damage or lower life expectancies.
  • Discover how active cooling in conjunction with passive cooling aids innovative product designs and overcomes LED thermal barriers.

Fundamentals of Photonics - Photovoltaics

Sep 16, 2009

Solar cells are an ideal source of clean, green energy because they convert solar energy directly into electricity. The challenge is improving the technology to cut costs and improve efficiency. Key performance issues include increasing the fraction of the solar spectrum absorbed and converted into electricity, improving energy-conversion efficiency, cutting costs of making and installing solar cells, and matching the daily cycle of solar power availability with the needs of consumers. This webcast will compare the types of photovoltaics in use and in development, look at major thrusts in research and development, and outline outstanding issues.
