Lightweight Optics

Lightweight Optics Highlighted ProductThe use of lightweighted optics is widespread in aerospace, metrology and astronomical applications. Lightweighted structures are mainly generated by removing material from a solid block of Zerodur, ULE, fused silica, etc., using CNC grinding process. Material is often removed using simple geometries such as triangles, square, round or hexagonal and can produce mass reduction of up to 80%. The ultimate mass reduction strongly depends on the design. VLOC's engineering team can provide custom lightweight designs. The minimum thickness of the faceplate depends on many factors. The thinner the faceplate and the larger the holes, the higher the risks that the faceplate deforms during polishing. Typical faceplate thickness is between 5 and 10 mm. All lightweight mirrors are acid etched to reduce the effects of subsurface damage and microcracks created during the machining process.
